Welcome to Iron Workers Local Union 79

Welcome to Local Union No. 79 of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers.  Our iron workers proudly employ their craft throughout the greater Hampton Roads area.  We are dedicated to providing our contractors with the most professional, safe and productive iron workers in the area.

As a Local Union, our mission is to:

  • Promote, by all proper means, the material and intellectual welfare of our members and their families.
  • Secure, by all legal and proper means, adequate wages, working conditions and opportunities of employment.
  • Encourage our members to register and vote in the interest of obtaining higher standards of citizenship and secure adequate legislation which will safeguard and promote the principles of free collective bargaining.

This has been our mission since our founding in 1904 and we will continue our efforts into the future.
Our union contractors are who make it possible for us to exist as a union and for us to continue to provide for our families with decent healthcare, wages, and pensions.  This is why we train hard throughout a four year apprenticeship and beyond with our journeyman upgrading.  Training and Productivity are essential as we strive to provide 8 hours of work for 8 hours of pay.

Ironworkers are a proud trade.  We pride ourselves on doing everyday what many people are unwilling or unable to do.  Our craft is tough, but we are tougher.  The conditions are rough, but so are we.  When the task seems impossible, we persevere and overcome to get it done.

Thank you for visiting our website.  We hope you find it informative and useful.  And if you have any questions or concerns, or if you think you have what it takes to be a union iron worker, please feel free to contact us.  Whether you wish to learn our craft or you have many years of experience outside of the union, if you share our values and commitment to our work, we would be proud to have you as our brother or sister.
